Smart traffic surveillance camera systems are becoming an indispensable part of the management and operation of highways in Vietnam. The system is a technology application solution to optimize traffic management, control and safety. This system uses cameras integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and image analysis, helping to automatically recognize license plates, detect violations, and monitor traffic flow in real time.

What is a smart traffic surveillance camera system?

A smart traffic surveillance camera system is a modern solution using high technology to manage and control traffic. The surveillance camera system not only records images but also has the ability to analyze and process data to optimize monitoring efficiency and support traffic operations.

Main components of the system

  • Surveillance cameras: usually PTZ cameras with the ability to adjust the rotation angle and zoom. These cameras are often high resolution with the ability to record in all weather conditions, light and night vision. These cameras are installed at important traffic points such as: on highways, intersections, roundabouts, overpasses, and crowded areas.
  • Image processing software: Integrating AI and Machine Learning to identify, analyze vehicles, count vehicles, detect accidents, or traffic violations such as running red lights.
  • Sensors and IoT devices: are often mounted at traffic points to measure traffic volume, speed, emissions and other indicators to help assess traffic situations and air quality.
  • Central control system: this is where data from cameras and sensors is sent to monitor and control traffic in real time.
  • Monitoring screen and control interface: helps managers easily monitor traffic points through Video Wall with the ability to display visual data about traffic events and warnings.

 

Operating principle

The smart traffic surveillance camera system operates according to the following process:

Recording & collecting data

  • Cameras and sensors continuously record images, speed, and direction of movement of vehicles.
  • Analysis & recognition: Data is transmitted to the central processor.

AI analyzes images to:

  • Recognize license plates (ANPR).
  • Classify vehicles (cars, motorbikes, trucks, buses, etc.).
  • Detect violations such as running red lights, driving in the wrong lane, and stopping and parking illegally.

Transmit data to the control center

  • Images and violation information are sent to the traffic center.
  • The system can automatically compare with the vehicle database to create a fine.

Storage & reporting

  • Data is saved for investigation, statistics, and traffic reporting.
  • A dashboard can be integrated to display real-time traffic status.

Challenges in Deployment

High Initial Investment Costs

  • Smart traffic camera systems require high-resolution cameras, sensors, AI processors, data centers, and transmission infrastructure.

Network Infrastructure and Data Storage

  • The system is only effective when integrated with traffic lights, vehicle databases, and urban operations centers.
