Intrusion alarm system

As physical security threats continue to evolve in complexity, intrusion alarm systems have moved far beyond their traditional role as standalone warning devices. What was once limited to triggering a siren upon unauthorized entry has now become a core component of an integrated security architecture—closely connected with video surveillance, access control, 24/7 monitoring centers, and intelligent management platforms.

Operating Principles and Core Components of an Intrusion Alarm System

An Intrusion Alarm System (IAS) is a network of electronic devices designed to detect, analyze, and report unauthorized access to protected areas.

Basic Operating Principle of IAS

  • Detection: Input sensors detect intrusion-related events such as forced door opening, motion within restricted zones, vibration, or glass breakage.
  • Processing: The control panel receives sensor signals, applies programmed logic, and validates the event status.
  • Alarm & Response: The system activates local alarms (sirens, strobes) and transmits alerts to users or monitoring centers for further action.

Core Components of a Standard Intrusion Alarm System

A typical IAS configuration consists of the following elements:

  • Control Panel: The system’s central processing unit, responsible for signal collection, event logic processing, data logging, and communication with external devices.
  • Detection Devices (Sensors): Including magnetic door contacts, motion detectors, glass break sensors, and vibration sensors, deployed according to a multi-layered security strategy.
  • Alarm Devices (Sounders/Strobes): Audible and visual alert devices designed for immediate deterrence and on-site notification.
  • Control & User Interfaces: Keypads, RFID cards, remote controllers, and mobile applications.
  • Communication Infrastructure: LAN, Wi-Fi, GSM/4G/5G, or PSTN, typically designed with redundancy to ensure continuous connectivity.

Classification of Intrusion Alarm Systems

Wired Intrusion Alarm Systems

Wired systems use physical cabling to connect sensors to the control panel. They offer high stability, strong resistance to interference, and are commonly deployed in large-scale or high-security facilities such as factories, office buildings, banks, and industrial zones.

Wireless Intrusion Alarm Systems

Wireless systems transmit data via RF or IP-based communication. Their main advantages include rapid installation, flexibility, and suitability for residential properties, small offices, and renovation projects.

Self-Monitoring Systems

Alerts are delivered directly to the system owner via mobile applications, SMS, or email. While cost-effective, this model relies heavily on the user’s ability to respond promptly.

Professionally Monitored Systems

These systems are connected to a 24/7 monitoring center that follows standardized incident response procedures and coordinates with rapid response teams when necessary. This model is widely adopted for enterprise-level and mission-critical facilities.

Common Types of Intrusion Detection Sensors

  • Passive Infrared (PIR) Motion Sensors: Detect changes in infrared radiation caused by human movement; primarily used in indoor environments.
  • Magnetic Door Contacts: Monitor door and window open/close status and serve as the first line of defense at entry points.
  • Glass Break Detectors: Analyze specific acoustic frequencies associated with breaking glass, ideal for glass façades and storefronts.
  • Shock / Vibration Sensors: Detect abnormal vibrations on safes, walls, metal doors, or ATMs.

Applicable Standards and Regulations in Vietnam

The design and deployment of intrusion alarm systems in Vietnam must comply with relevant national standards and regulatory frameworks, including:

  • TCVN 7568-14: Alarm systems – Technical requirements
  • TCVN 11930:2017: Information security for electronic systems
  • QCVN 135:2024/BTTTT: Technical regulation on radio equipment
  • Decree No. 96/2016/NĐ-CP: Security and public order requirements for security service providers

Compliance with these standards ensures not only legal conformity but also system reliability, scalability, and long-term operational integrity.
