Specialized camera for chemical plants & acidic environments

Acid vapor, high humidity and highly corrosive environments are “silent killers” for all electronic devices. So what is a monitoring solution that is smart enough – and durable enough – to operate stably in such harsh conditions?

Introduction to monitoring needs in chemical plants

In chemical plants, where dangerous chemical reactions, toxic gas leaks, explosions or temperature incidents take place, safety monitoring is always a top priority. Unlike normal industrial environments, chemical production areas require camera systems to operate stably in harsh conditions: high corrosion, temperature fluctuations, acid vapor and chemical dust.

The monitoring system not only helps to observe, record and store data, but also supports early warning of incidents, analyzes abnormal behavior of equipment or employees, serves labor safety, fire prevention and fighting and factory operation management.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for every factory - especially in highly corrosive environments. That is why choosing the right surveillance camera system for the chemical environment becomes a matter of survival for businesses.

The role of CCTV systems in hazardous production environments

In hazardous production environments such as chemical plants, metallurgy plants, wastewater treatment plants, or battery production plants, the risks of fire, explosion, chemical leakage, work accidents, etc. are always latent and can happen at any time. Therefore, installing a CCTV system is not only for monitoring but also plays a strategic role in ensuring operational safety.

The important values of the system include:

  • 24/7 continuous monitoring in high-risk areas such as reaction rooms, chemical tanks, pipeline systems, power stations, etc.
  • Early detection of abnormal signs, such as smoke, leaks, collisions, and improper behavior - helping to intervene promptly before serious incidents occur.
  • Storing video data for investigation of incident causes, as legal evidence or transparency with authorities.
  • Supporting remote monitoring via internal network or internet, minimizing direct contact in dangerous areas.
  • Protecting assets, expensive equipment and flammable materials, minimizing damage when incidents occur.
  • In the digital age, many CCTV systems are also integrated with AI technology to analyze images, automatically warn, identify people, illegal intrusion areas, improve accuracy and response speed. This is an important factor in building a safety system that meets ISO, NFPA, OSHA standards... in high-risk factories.

Why do acidic environments need specialized cameras?

Acidic environments - such as chemical plants, industrial wastewater treatment, electroplating areas, battery production, fertilizers, etc. - are one of the most corrosive and toxic environments for electronic equipment, especially surveillance cameras.

Conventional cameras, if installed in this environment, are quickly damaged due to:

  • Acid vapors (H₂SO₄, HCl, HNO₃...) corrode the shell, lens and electronic circuit board inside.
  • Humidity and chemical vapors penetrate, causing short circuits or distorted image signals.
  • Extreme temperatures and chemical condensation reduce the life of components.
  • Chemical contamination causes the lens to become blurry, the image is no longer clear, and the ability to monitor details is lost.

Therefore, the use of specialized cameras - designed to be corrosion-resistant, resistant to chemicals and harsh conditions - is a must if you want to maintain long-term and safe monitoring capabilities for the system.

Risks when using conventional cameras

Using conventional surveillance cameras in industrial environments with chemical vapors, high humidity or corrosive acids is a common mistake but has many serious potential risks. Devices that are not designed for specific conditions will quickly encounter problems such as:

  • Corrosion of the outer shell and internal components
  • Lens become blurred, discolored or damaged
  • Moisture and corrosive gases penetrate the circuit
  • Rapidly reduced life span, high replacement costs
  • Image data loss at critical times

Criteria for choosing cameras for chemical plants

Corrosion-resistant camera housing

  • The housing meets NEMA 4X or IP66/IP67 standards to protect against dust, water and chemical vapors.
  • Prioritize 316L stainless steel, epoxy-coated aluminum alloy or special acid-resistant coating.
  • In extreme environments, use a specialized anti-corrosion housing.

Lens cover glass is resistant to chemicals

  • Use sapphire glass or fluorine-coated glass, which helps prevent chemical adhesion, is easy to clean and does not become cloudy over time.
  • Avoid using mica or polycarbonate plastic - which is easily blurred or brittle by acids.

Withstand high temperatures and humidity

  • The camera must operate stably at temperatures from -30°C to 60°C (depending on the area).
  • Equipped with a heater or fan (cooling) if the environment has large fluctuations in temperature.

Self-cleaning function - wiper/spray (if needed)

  • For areas with chemical dust, white smoke or grease, the camera should have a wiper, integrated with an automatic spray nozzle to ensure the image is always clear.
  • Helps limit manual maintenance in hazardous areas.

Anti-vibration - anti-impact - anti-vandalism

  • Achieve IK10 if installed in areas with strong vibration or susceptible to collision.
  • Especially needed for cameras installed in technical corridors, areas near pumps, reactions.

If the area is at risk of explosion: explosion-proof cameras (ATEX) are needed

  • For special areas with flammable gases (VOC, solvents...)
  • The camera must be ATEX Zone 1/2 or IECEx certified depending on the risk level

Remote connection & management

  • Support centralized monitoring, stable signal transmission via LAN/PoE or optical network.
  • Prioritize cameras that support AI to analyze behavior, send abnormal warnings (if budget allows).
