Fire suppression systems are playing an increasingly vital role in protecting assets and people, especially in spaces that demand a high level of safety, such as server rooms, data centers, or document storage facilities. Among modern solutions, the FM200 nozzle stands out due to its ability to quickly extinguish fires without harming equipment or the environment. So, what makes the FM200 nozzle the optimal choice for fire suppression systems? Let’s explore this in detail in the following article!
The FM200 nozzle is a critical component of the FM200 fire suppression system, utilizing FM200 gas (HFC-227ea) to extinguish fires. Upon detecting a fire, this nozzle releases FM200 gas, a special type of gas capable of reducing oxygen concentration in the air, interrupting the combustion reaction, and rapidly cooling the fire.

The FM200 nozzle is a relatively simple device, but it plays a crucial role in the fire suppression system. Its main purpose is to distribute FM200 gas evenly and effectively to the fire-affected area.
Material:
Made of stainless steel or brass to ensure high durability, heat resistance, and corrosion protection. Some high-end models have a protective coating to enhance longevity.
Function:
This component directly bears the pressure from the FM200 gas that is transported through the system. It is fixed onto the piping and plays the role of dispersing the gas.
Design:
Several small holes are drilled around the body of the nozzle, arranged in a circular or directional pattern depending on the spray type (360° or 180°). The size and number of holes are calculated to distribute the gas evenly and efficiently.
Function:
It sprays the FM200 gas into the air as fine particles, creating a uniform coverage in the fire area.
Material:
Typically made to match the nozzle body, with standard threads for easy installation into the system's piping.
Size:
Common sizes: 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, etc., depending on the fire suppression system.
Classification of FM200 Nozzles Based on Structure
Activating the Fire Suppression System:
The FM200 fire suppression system is integrated with fire detection devices such as heat sensors, smoke detectors, or an automatic fire alarm system. When a fire is detected, the signal from these devices triggers the discharge valve on the FM200 gas cylinder. The gas is then pushed through the piping system under high pressure and ready to be sprayed through the nozzles to quickly extinguish the fire.
Distributing Gas Through the Nozzle:
The FM200 nozzle is designed with specialized spray holes or nozzles to effectively disperse the gas. The gas from the cylinder is directed to the nozzle and is released as fine droplets. Depending on the design, the nozzle can distribute the gas in either a 360° or 180° direction, ensuring the gas covers the protected area, including hard-to-reach spots.
Extinguishing the Fire:
FM200 extinguishes the fire through two main mechanisms:
First, the gas absorbs heat from the fire, lowering the temperature below the combustion threshold, preventing the flames from spreading.
Second, FM200 interferes with the chemical chain reaction of the fire, preventing the combination of oxygen with the fuel. The significant advantage of FM200 is that it does not lower oxygen levels in the air, ensuring safety for people within the protected area.
Completing the Fire Suppression Process:
After the FM200 gas is released and the fire is extinguished, the gas leaves no residue or residue on surfaces. This helps protect electronic devices and assets in the area. However, ventilation should be carried out to remove any residual gas before returning to normal operations in the fire-affected area.
FM200 nozzles are designed to evenly distribute the gas, with two types: 360° or 180° spray, ensuring rapid coverage of the entire protected area. FM200 gas can extinguish fires in just a few seconds after activation, especially effective against fires caused by flammable liquids, electronic devices, or chemical substances.
Unlike other fire suppression gases like CO2, FM200 does not reduce the oxygen level in the air. This ensures the safety of individuals present in the area when the fire suppression system is activated, especially in confined spaces such as server rooms or data centers.
FM200 gas leaves no residue or particles after being released, preventing damage to sensitive electronic devices, machinery, or valuable assets in the area. This is why FM200 nozzles are commonly used in data storage rooms, computer rooms, or areas containing critical equipment.
FM200 is certified as a clean gas, causing no harm to the ozone layer and having minimal environmental impact. Using FM200 nozzles not only protects assets but also helps reduce the negative impact on the ecosystem.
FM200 nozzles come in various types with designs suitable for different installation locations, from open spaces to narrow wall corners. The gas piping and nozzle system can be easily integrated into existing fire protection systems, reducing installation and maintenance costs.
FM200 nozzles and the FM200 fire suppression system meet international safety and quality standards such as NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), ensuring effectiveness and reliability in any situation.

To make an informed decision about selecting the right fire suppression system, it is essential to compare various solutions. Below is a detailed comparison table between FM200 nozzles and other popular fire suppression solutions:
| Feature | FM200 Nozzle | Water | Powder | CO2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Suppression Effectiveness | Very fast, highly effective for various types of fires | Relatively slow, effective for Class A fires | Fast, effective for Class B, C fires | Very fast, effective for Class B, C fires |
| Impact on Equipment | No damage | May damage electronic equipment, cause rusting | May leave residue, reducing equipment efficiency | Can cause excessive cooling, damaging electronic equipment |
| Environmental Impact | Safe, non-polluting | Pollutes the environment, especially with chemicals | May cause environmental pollution | Not eco-friendly, may contribute to greenhouse effect |
| Safety for People | Safe, non-toxic | Safe but may cause slipperiness | Can cause respiratory irritation | May cause suffocation if concentrations are too high |
| Cost | High | Low | Medium | Medium |
| Applications | Data centers, laboratories, warehouses, control rooms, etc. | Class A fires (solid materials), fixed fire suppression systems | Class B (liquid) fires, Class C (gas) fires, suitable for open spaces | Class B, C fires, suitable for enclosed spaces |
